Ubuntu/Xubuntu on an iBook (is harder than it seems)

I'm working on getting an old iBook we had laying around up on Ubuntu (PPC). My hope is that I will learn something about Linux, which is a good thing, especially when you work for Google. I originally tried installing Xubuntu 8.04 on it, which worked. Kind of. It would boot about 40% of the time, and the other times, it would present a black screen, followed by a pause and then a ever changing rainbow hippie looking thing. It was weird. I read all the posts about editing my yaboot.conf, and committing the changes, but the best I could get was about a 50% boot success rate. Yaboot sucks, by the way, at least I think so.

Ugh.

Before I give up, I am downloading Ubuntu 8.04 ppc and am going to see if the issue I am having is a weird XFCE thing, although I doubt it. I'm about 30% done with the download now, and will post my results when I have some. In the meantime, if there's anyone out there who has found a way around the weird Rainbow thing, I'd love to hear about it.

As always,

Cheers.
